NATHAN BURMEISTER

Costume Design

Nathan is a designer and theatre maker who graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Performing Arts in 2014 and is a 2017 graduate from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) with a Masters of Design for Performance. His work explores new processes, forms and styles in theatre and performance. Nathan is interested in adapting and redefining canonical texts, reinterpreting them from heterogenic storytelling modes and opening them up to contemporary readings.

Nathan’s work includes set and costume design for Flora the Red Menace (VCA Music Theatre 2019); Q at La Mama Theatre; All That Is Right (Monash Academy of Performing Arts), including lighting design; Sneakyville (Before Shot Productions and FortyFive Downstairs); things we should talk about (Union House Theatre); as part of the 2018 Midsumma Festival, Small Cruelties (FortyFive Downstairs) and AntigoneX (Theatre Works); Never (VCA Theatre 2017), presented as part of the 2017 Melbourne Fringe Festival; Caucasian Chalk Circle (VCA Theatre 2017); Elegies for Angles, Punks and Raging Queens in the 2017 Midsumma Festival (Underscore Productions); Ryan at La Mama Theatre; The Outsiderand La Mama Theatre (Stork Theatre Company); Antigone (The Bloomshed); for Monash Shakespeare Company, Troylus and Cressida and Titus, which included lighting design; Softly Pouting While Walking Into Breezes (MUST), including the 2015 Midsumma Festival remount; The Government Inspector for Monash Uni Student Theatre (MUST); Knives in Hens (MUST).

Nathan was set design secondment to Owen Phillips on Vivid White at the Melbourne Theatre Company through 2017 and design associate to Eugyeene Teh on Nightingale And The Rose with Little Ones Theatre at Theatre Works in 2018.

Nathan makes his Lyric design debut in the 2019 production of Barry Conyngham's FLY.
