Lyric Opera of Melbourne presents Iphis, a thrilling 70-minute opera by celebrated Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin as part of its 2022 celebration of Australian women composers.
In August 2022, Lyric will present its first fully-staged opera since theatres closed during the pandemic. Pulling together a team of some of Melbourne's most exciting creatives directed by Katy Maudlin with a cast of established & emerging opera singers, Lyric's new Artistic Director Patrick Burns continues Lyric's proud tradition of presenting the works of Australian Composers.
With a sound world that mixes klezmer, romanticism and opera, Iphis explores an ancient greek myth in which the girl Iphis is raised as a boy to avoid her father's wrath. All is well until Iphis must marry the love of her life and face the question of how to navigate a world in what is seen is not what is real.
Presented at St Kilda's TheatreWorks, this 1997 chamber opera features the original nine-piece orchestra and provides an opportunity to celebrate not only the work of a fully Australian team of artists, creatives, composer and librettist but to mark and celebrate the Elena Kats-Chernin's 65 birthday.
