ROBERT JOHNSON

Assistant Director

Robert has a Bachelor of Performing Arts from Monash University and is currently completing his Masters of Directing for Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts. He runs independent company Burning House for which he has directed The Tragedy of Coriolanus, Summerfolk and Ajax. His other directing credits include When Nietzsche Wept, The Woman in Black, Closer, Ten Plagues (Loose Canon Theatre Company), Sunday in the Park With George (UMMTA), The Lovers (V.C.A) and The Doll Hospital (MKA: Theatre of New Writing).

 

His opera credits as a director include Diereigroshenoper (Monash University) and Winterreise (Post-Opera Company). As an assistant director and intern Robert has worked with MTC (Archimedes' War, The Son, Lucky), Belvoir St Theatre (Oedipus Rex), Bell Shakespeare (Othello), Opera Australia (Tosca), Watch This (Pacific Overtures), Lyric Opera Melbourne (The Tender Land, L'Heure Esapgnol and Gianni Schicchi) and MKA: Theatre of New Writing (Triumph, Bounty). Robert has also written two plays, The Age of Reason and When Nietzsche Wept.

Robert first worked with Lyric as Assistant Director on The Tender Land, before returning on the Double Bill of L'heure espagnole and Gianni Schicchi and in 2017 assisting Director Tyran Parke on Coronation of Poppea.
