RAPHAEL WONG

Raphael completed his Bachelor of Music under Full Merit Scholarship at the University of Melbourne and has since worked on stage and in concert with companies across Australia, the USA and China.

He was an opera scholar with Australian Music Events, and a member of The Opera Studio Melbourne, before making his operatic principal debut as Top in Lyric Opera of Melbourne’s The Tender Land in 2014. Raphael has twice been a finalist in the Herald Sun Aria Competition, runner up in the National Liederfest Competition, and received a Green Room Association Nomination for his role as the Musiklehrer in Citi Opera’s Ariadne auf Naxos. Raphael is the recipient of the 2017 Acclaim Awards Italy Opera Fellowship, and the Rotary International Next Generations Service Exchange Scholarship, which will see him undertake a study tour of Italy and Germany in 2018.

2018 credits include: Baritone Soloist in Elgar’s The Light of Life, Melbourne Intervarsity Choral Festival; Mr Lindquist,  A Little Night Music, Watch This Productions; Prince Ivan-Karolovich, Kaschey the Immortal, Citi Opera; The Husband, Les Mamelles de Teresias, Lyric Opera of Melbourne; Chorus, William Tell, Victorian Opera.

Other principal credits include; Musiklehrer, Ariadne auf Naxos; Filiberto, Il Signor Bruschino; Silvano, Un ballo in maschera; Carter, Our Man in Havana; Colas, Bastien and Bastienne; Boy 2, Trouble in Tahiti; St. Ignatius, Four Saints in Three Acts; Lun Tha, The King and I; Papageno, The Magic Flute; Tiridate, Radamisto; Dottore Grenvil/Marchese, La Traviata; Caspar, Play of Herod; The Footman, Cinderella; Feuilly, Les Miserablés; Sweeney Todd, Sweeney Todd; Nicely Nicely Johnson, Guys and Dolls; Samuel, The Three Sisters who are not Sisters. He was awarded the Lyrebird Award for ‘Best Male Performer in a Musical Theatre Variety’ for 2014.

Raphael has been a chorus member with Opera Australia and Victorian Opera since 2011.

Raphael holds a Diploma of Education, and is an experienced vocal, choral, piano and cello teacher, having taught across primary and secondary level education.

As a past music director with Oxagen Productions, his credits include; Songs for a New World and Little Women. Amongst his stage and concert work, Raphael also provides music for the Victorian Government and the corporate sector.

Raphael made his Lyric debut as Top in The Tender land. He has gone on to perform the roles of Ramiro in Spanish Time, Filiberto in Il Signor Bruschino, Carter in Our Man in Havana.  He returns to Lyric in 2018 as The Husband in Les Mamelles de Tiresias.
