JAMES YOUNG

Baritone

24-year-old Australian Baritone James Young began his classical vocal training eight years ago and has worked with many esteemed teachers and coaches.  Highlights from 2017 include lead roles in Don Giovanni as ‘Masetto’ with Millennium Opera and the Australian premiere of Copland’s rarely performed The Second Hurricane with Victorian Opera. 

 

James is a young artist with ‘Opera Scholars Australia’ and was recently engaged to perform in two of the country’s most popular opera galas: ‘Opera in the Alps’ and ‘Voices in the Twilight’.   James has performed in Melbourne productions of The Pirates of Penzance as the ‘Pirate King’ and as ‘Passarino’ in The Phantom of the Opera.

 

James was the 2017 recipient of the West Gippsland Eisteddfod's Tim Pretty Classical Vocal Scholarship and the Classical Vocal Perpetual Most Promising (Open).  He also placed second in the prestigious Wollongong Eisteddfod Operatic Aria Championship in 2017.  James has found success in a number of other eisteddfods and competitions, reaching the semi-finals of the 2016 Herald Sun Aria Competition.  

James makes his Lyric debut in the 2018 production of Les Mamelles de Tirésias.
